About the project
The Townsville Grammar School site is situated on a prominent corner location of North Shore Boulevard and Erskine Place in North Shore, in the Northern Beaches growth corridor of Townsville.
Through the exploration, testing and refinement of ideas, the concept design aligns to the schools objectives. It balances functional requirements with an aspirational design outcome to promote the schools culture of achievement and identity as the leading educational institution in North Queensland.
The covered outdoor learning area (COLA), or ‘The Street’ is a unifying element and signature for the school, providing a covered connection to the campus promoting a comfortable environment for learn and play. ‘The Street’ offers the opportunity for all year’s levels to congregate sinuously, and integrates hardscape and softscape elements to define clusters for group learning.
The built form of the school is situated on the upper platform flanking the northern and southern edge of ‘The Street’ creating an opportunity to promote the TGS brand. Activation and population of the covered outdoor learning and play area is achieved with visual connectivity and provision direct access from all buildings, encouraging and optimising use across all hours of the school day.
Longitudinally, ‘The Street’ connects to the playing ovals situated on the lower platform to the north-west of the campus whilst the eastern end addresses north shore boulevard, anchored by an amphitheatre as one the school’s outdoor learning areas.
