About the project
Press café is a pop-up eatery in James Street, Brisbane, situated among fashion boutiques and offers a convenient and informal option for breakfast and lunch.
The design of Press café incorporates a green roof and western sun shading details. A tight site, roughly 20sqm, lodged between a bus stop, car park and retail frontage proved to be a prime opportunity for infill. James Street, a successful street at bringing the numbers was an ideal location for this fragment of ‘urban infill’.
The brief was to create a lockable ‘thing’ that could facilitate the sale of food and beverage and make use of the passing street trade. A number of ideas were explored from shipping containers to caravans but the bespoke approach became the most engaging. The site was short of greenery so a garden was high on the agenda.
