The project has been sited in order to provide a new address and identity for FNU’s Koronivia campus. The highly functional “machine” of hospital and laboratory is wrapped in a shaded colonnade which establishes primary circulation routes within the broader campus in addition to providing spaces for outdoor learning and incidental gathering.
The colonnade also offers respite from the intense sun and afternoon monsoons experienced in the tropics. Reflecting the rough cast concrete used in many of Fiji’s public buildings, its painted super graphic recalls the joyful colour experienced in Fijian art, clothing and residential construction.
The facility will be designed with careful consideration for environmental impact and sustainability, employing both active and passive design measures.
