About the project
Named after the widely recognised asbestosis and social justice campaigner, the Bernie Banton Centre is the world's first standalone research laboratory dedicated to asbestos related disease.
The Bernie Banton Centre is located on the Concord Repatriation General Hospital Campus and includes associated educational and administrative functions. Conrad Gargett (formerly MSJ) completed the new facility consisting of 6 wet laboratories (5 at PC-2 and 1 at PC-3) and 2 dry laboratories. The buildings materiality, colour and detail respond to the landscape setting and scale of the existing campus. Sun shading has been designed to both control direct sunlight in laboratory areas and to provide a civic presence on the east elevation.
