Conrad Gargett Contributes to Logan City’s Future Sport and Recreation Vision in South East Queensland
Conrad Gargett, a firm experienced in master planning, urban design and landscape architecture, was engaged by Logan City Council in South East Queensland to contribute towards the future vision for key sport and recreation sites in Logan city. As one of the largest and fastest growing urban cities in Australia, Logan is located between Brisbane and the Gold Coast in a growth and transport corridor connecting the two cities, and continues to emerge as an innovative and dynamic city of the future.
Senior Associate of Conrad Gargett, Joakim Willemsen, stated, “Our practice was commissioned to produce master plans for two significant sites in Logan City, Lowe Oval in Underwood and Cronulla Park in Slacks Creek. These master plans will enable a coordinated and strategic planning approach for the future provision and development of optimally planned sport and recreation infrastructure at these sites in Logan that meet the current and future needs of the emerging community.”
“The endorsement of these master plans by Logan City Council demonstrates their commitment to delivering the vision of active, healthy communities, integrated with the opportunity to create high quality ‘go to’ public places that encourage individual engagement through to the evolution of larger scaled community / cultural events,” commented Willemsen. The Council commissioned Conrad Gargett to produce fly throughs to communicate the attributes of the master plan visions which are published online.
The key features of the Lowe Oval, Underwood Master Plan (6.9ha site) include:
Relocation of the AFL club from the site to an alternate site;
Improvements to the aquatic centre;
The redevelopment of new main Logan North Aquatic and Fitness Centre building;
The staged development of a recreation park (currently the AFL oval) featuring a bandstand / stage, picnic shelters, fitness equipment, pathways/bikeway, multi-activity spaces with discretely integrated toilet facilities, seating and shading;
The creation of a highly activated central public piazza, connecting all major zones of the site, including the redeveloped library, aquatic centre and recreation park; and
Significant car parking and access improvements.

The key features of the Cronulla Park, Slacks Creek Master Plan (10.2ha site) include:
A main landmark building addressing a prominent intersection of the city, incorporating a PCYC, allied health, wellness facilities and a possible Centre of Excellence for Women’s Sport;
Two (2) AFL fields including a clubhouse;
Landscaped boulevard improvements along Kingston and Compton Roads linked to a central public piazza activated by all the new park features.
A recreation park including picnic shelters, fitness equipment, half court, pathways/bikeway, multi-activity space, seating, shading and toilet facilities;
Car parking; and
Secondary access to the site through Cronulla Court and investigations of future access opportunities.

All these master plans integrated extensive stakeholder and community engagement input opportunities in the development of the initial project brief, and in informing the ultimate final design solutions. City Lifestyle and Community Committee Chair, Logan City Councillor Steve Swenson said, “Each of the master plans provides a long term vision about how the areas should be developed over the next 10 to 20 years and that is why it was important to hear the views of our residents and what they would like to see happen,” he said.
“These master plans provide a long term vision for the development of our dynamic city and will determine what work needs to be done to conserve and revitalise our facilities to ensure they provide for a range of sporting and recreational opportunities across the city.”
The proposed master plans are to be delivered over the long term and the funding will be subject to Logan City Council’s 2018 / 2019 budget consideration.
