$543M Victorian Heart Hospital’s Initial Design Concepts Revealed
Conrad Gargett | John Wardle Architects, appointed to design the Victorian Heart Hospital, Australia’s first heart hospital and landmark integrated cardiovascular centre of excellence, confirm that initial design concepts for the hospital have been revealed.
The Victorian Heart Hospital, located at Monash University in Clayton, Melbourne, is a partnership between the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services, Monash University and Monash Health. The hospital will build on Monash Health’s four platforms for cardiovascular health:
- Excellence in cardiac patient care in cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery;
- Innovative, translational research;
- World-class education and training; and
- Robust cardiovascular healthcare policy development.
Conrad Gargett | John Wardle Architects’ initial design concepts respond to the objectives and aspirations of the Victorian Heart Hospital, and will aim to:
- Create a healing environment – a salutogenic approach that connects people with nature in positive and affirming ways to create a calm, healing environment;
- Embed learning, teaching and research – encourage disciplinary advances by embedding education, training and research in all clinical areas;
- Foster innovation – develop innovative responses to the Clinical Functional Brief whilst working with the Victorian Heart Hospital team;
- Create a people centric hospital – consider the experience of all people in the hospital environment including patients, visitors including carers, clinicians, researchers and staff; and
- Create a sustainable building – consider sustainability as holistic, a set of principles that includes internal air quality, passive design and material choices that directly impact upon the health and comfort of people using the hospital.
Conrad Gargett | John Wardle Architects’ design approach for the Victorian Heart Hospital integrates and synthesises the input of urban designers, architects, interior designers and landscape architects aligning with the engagement of client and stakeholder groups at all levels. Our design approach weaves landscape into the daily experience of people within the hospital environment, introduces natural materials in unexpected ways and clearly intertwines research with clinical activities. The hospital is scheduled to open in 2022.
