The publication of Robin Dods: Selected Works by Robert Riddel was undertaken to enable a better understanding ofarchitecture of Robin Dods. The best works are identifiedultimately establishing Dods’s reputation and the worth of his surviving designs.

Robin Dods (1868-1920) was considered to be the most eminent of Queensland’s architects in the early 20th Century. Despite this, many of his buildings have been destroyed or mutilated due to an ignorance of their quality.

Author Robert Riddel has spent many years researching the work of Dods, his writing and research into this seminal figure is joined by contributions from Dr Clive Lucas, a well-known conservation architect in Sydney, and Professor John Macarthur, Dean and Head of the School of Architecture at the University of Queensland. The book includes Dods’s own photographs as well as high quality photography by Richard Stringer, whose expert eye perfectly captures the essence that made Dods such a highly-sought after talent in his day, and his surviving buildings such a treasured presence now.

Presented in a professionally designed, full colour, high quality hard cover format, the publication showcases 33 works by the architect both in Queensland and New South Wales to demonstrate the quality of the work and to present it for national assessment. Of the 33 works showcased only 20 remain, some in a precarious state. It is hoped that the book will help ensure the survival and responsible management of the remaining works and to promote an appreciation of what Dods accomplished.

The publication received a 2012 National Trust of Queensland Gold Governor’s Heritage Award and the John Herbert Memorial Award for its action to conserve and promote thesignificance of the architecture of Robin Dods.

Robin Dods: Selected Works is proudly endorsed by QUEENSLANDERSIGN™ an initiative of the Queensland Design Council.
