The project replaces the existing University playing field with a 3-storey building incorporating a 800 covered Carspaces on Ground Level and Level 01, active transport end-of-ride facilities, a FIFA accredited synthetic Sportsfield including change rooms, teaching spaces catering amenities on Level 02. An elevated pedestrian walkway connects the building to the Universities upper campus with an accessible path of travel.
The project was designed, documented and construction completed within 15 months of initial appointment. The structure has been designed to accommodate a future vertical carpark expansion of a further 2 stories (800 car spaces). The widening and signalisation of Herston Road on the junction of Sports lane provides safe connection point into the campus for vehicle traffic,
Care has been taken by the design team to craft a stadium appearance, minimising the impact of the carpark which doubles the campus capacity. The sportsfield accommodates soccer, touch football, ultimate frisebee and an 80m training synthetic running track as well as a base for the universities Human Movements faculty. The canopies fenestration was designed to encapsulate the sportsfield whilst providing a high level of playing surface cross ventilation. Low maintenance materials, cost effective construction, minimising light-spill pollution and efficient planning were key considerations in the final design.
