Sydney Convention Centre Link Building
The South Complex “Link” building, commissioned by the Darling Harbour Authority, joins the two existing buildings of the Sydney Convention Centre and the Sydney Exhibition Centre into one complex, located below the Western Distributor freeways.
The new “link” accommodates the main entry, central registration and management areas, together with a 1000 seat state-of-the-art auditorium with multi-functional capability for staging various production formats, a 1000 seat banquet hall and 2,200m2 of conjoined exhibition space with a variety of conference rooms area for a total floor area of 20,000m2.
The complex of roadways which rise, tilt and interweave above the site imposed major height limitations and acoustic constraints, but the columns which penetrate the building could not be utilised. However the new building asserts itself and faces the waterfront with a sloping cantilevered glass facade, designed as a bold gesture in scale with the large carriageway structures.
