North Gheran Community Development, Tripoli, Libya
Conrad Garget were engaged by UPET TBG to prepare an integrated landscape master plan for a 100 ha urban development in North Gheran, Libya. Located on the Mediterranean Sea approximately 10 km from the centre of Tripoli, North Gheran will be a sustainable mixed-use tourism destination and residential neighbourhood for 10,000 residents supported by world-class retail, hotel and office facilities. Tourist attractors include four hotels, convention centre, aquarium and museum. The residential neighbourhood is supported by community facilities including a school, library and recycling centre.
The primary aim of the landscape master plan is to deliver a strong landscape framework relevant to its location, topography, climatic conditions and the rich cultural history of the region. The landscape design focused on the development of an integrated public open space network including parks and plazas, structured tree planting for boulevards and streets, roof top gardens and valuable waterfront land. Traditionally, settlement in the region developed around oases. The design concept reinforces this traditional relationship to the landscape with three distinct landscape zones: oasis, transitional and arid. Oasis style planting (fertile ground with lush vegetation) is suggested for highly frequented common areas, smaller gardens and courtyards. The Transitional zone (intermediate between oasis and arid) comprises well shaded boulevards, plazas and pedestrian pathways with sand and gravel surfaces with the Arid zone typically comprising desert trees and palms and other succulent plants requiring no additional water.
