Lautoka Hotel, Fiji
The New Lautoka Hotel project was a limited design competition to redevelop an existing hotel in one of Fiji’s major centres.
Accommodation includes 92 guest rooms, bars, restaurants and a night club, all built over two stages to allow the existing hotel to continue in operation. A construction system employing site assembled prefabricated room modules allowed economies in terms of time for construction and addressed potential issues with the availability labour and materials.
The design focused the hotel tower towards the main streets while capturing views to the waterfront. This approach created a number of desirable outcomes for the hotel. The orientation maximises the potential for the majority of the rooms to have ocean views. The siting provides maximum street frontage for retail spaces and establishes a prominent hotel entrance and foyer spaces
The building form is a reinterpretation of the traditional pitched roofs of Fiji. The finishes used accentuate the natural materials common to Fiji; stone, timber, tapestry and make use of details such as Fijian tapestry patterns in screens, traditional rope wrapping to structures, and stone cladding to major structural elements.
