Combined Mess, Enoggera Barracks
A super mess in both size and capacity, this building’s roof plane spans one hectare in area yet sits sensitively and hovers respectfully over a tributary of Enoggera Creek. Elements of the building’s form work to break down the perceived scale of the development by framing the formal entrances and the senior messes traversing the natural waterway by footbridges. This messing facility continued a study in the inter-relationship of cross-sectional volumes creating both intimate and generous spaces that manipulate natural daylight and cross ventilation over a very large area. Off form concrete frames and a blade wall provide a strong, muscular aesthetic appropriate to the army.
