Children’s Medical Research Institute Redevelopment, Westmead
The new Children’s Medical Research Institute (CMRI) expands the original facility, also by CGAMW, to provide seven levels of laboratories, an animal house, administrative and support areas which integrate the complex demands of contemporary research buildings. An atrium above the previous hub provides a new collaborative focus for the development, to facilitate informal and formal institute functions that include a staff recreation area.
An important consideration in the CMRI development is the desire to incorporate environmentally sustainable design (ESD) into the facility. From the earliest sketches careful attention has been given to the arrangement, performance and integration of services, spaces and built form, in order that the thermal, energy, and water demands will be able to be carefully controlled.
